Former Tesla executive and current CEO of DVx Ventures, John McNiel, presented an "organizational algorithm" as a key condition for innovation in the healthcare industry, aimed at simplifying complexity and streamlining processes.
McNiel, who served as Tesla's global head of sales and service from 2015 to 2018, introduced this innovation algorithm at the HIMSS 2026 opening keynote speech at the Venetian Convention Center in Las Vegas, USA. The audience, consisting of approximately 2,000 attendees, showed great interest in his presentation.
During his time at Tesla, McNiel played a pivotal role in the company's rapid growth, particularly around the launch of the Model 3. He emphasized that innovation is not about individual genius but rather a system that organizations can repeatedly execute. By reducing complexity and setting clear goals, any industry can experience significant growth.
McNiel shared his experience at Tesla, where he helped increase annual revenue from $1.8 billion to $20 billion in just 30 months by implementing an organizational innovation process rather than simple improvements.
He outlined a 5-step process for the innovation algorithm: questioning all requirements, eliminating unnecessary processes, simplifying and optimizing processes, shortening business cycles as much as possible, and automating tasks. He highlighted Tesla's success in doubling online sales by streamlining the car ordering process from 64 clicks to just 13, making it as easy as ordering a pizza online.
McNiel stressed the importance of applying the same approach to the healthcare industry, emphasizing the need for clear goals such as reducing diagnosis time by 50% or cutting patient processing time in half, rather than just focusing on adopting AI technology.
He emphasized that innovation does not start with grand ideas but with continuously questioning and simplifying small problems.
