A restaurant in Shanghai, China stirred controversy by selling the popular dish of 'Tomato Egg Stir-fry' for 520 yuan (about $80). According to the South China Morning Post on the 6th, the Jinrongdabanglu restaurant in Hongkou district of Shanghai recently offered this dish for 520 yuan, which is several times higher than the price in regular restaurants.
Tomato Egg Stir-fry is a common home-cooked dish in China and is considered one of the 'national foods'. Recently, many content creators attracted attention by ordering this dish and filming the cooking process to share on social media.
In the video, the chef was seen using Emu eggs from Germany instead of regular eggs. Emu eggs have very hard shells that need to be cracked with a small hammer, and the cracked content was cooked in a wine glass instead of a regular bowl, which caught the eye of viewers.
The restaurant used premium Dutch tomatoes known as 'Provence tomatoes'. However, the cooking method itself was not significantly different from the traditional Tomato Egg Stir-fry.
The restaurant stated that they only sell one set of this dish per day. The cost of ingredients is about 200 yuan, with German Emu eggs accounting for at least 150 yuan and tomatoes for about 50 yuan.
The chef mentioned that this dish is a "special menu for reserved customers" and cannot be compared on the same price basis as regular Tomato Egg Stir-fry.
